Proposed change to McDougall Street, Brunswick
On this page:
Merri-bek City Council is proposing to rename part of McDougall Street to McDougall Place and update the road extent to better reflect how the area functions today.
Over time, the section of McDougall Street between Barkly Street and Weston Street has evolved from a traditional street into a pedestrian-focused area that no longer provides through vehicle access. While it remains a public road, its current name and road type no longer accurately reflect its function.
This creates issues for emergency responders and general navigation, as well as being non-compliant with the Victorian Government’s Naming Rules.
To resolve this issue, Council proposes to:
- Change the road type from McDougall Street to McDougall Place.
- Amend the named extent of the road to align with its current physical layout.

This proposal is being undertaken in accordance with the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria 2022 and the Geographic Place Names Act 1998.
The proposed changes will help ensure Council records, mapping systems and addressing information accurately reflect the road environment and support clear identification for emergency services, visitors and the broader community.
Following the notification period, and subject to the outcome of community feedback, the amended road name and extent will be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for approval and, if approved, published in the Victorian Government Gazette.
