New names endorsed at Council meeting

15 Aug 2024

Last night, Councilors endorsed 2 new names for the Cultural and Community Hub at 33 Saxon Street, and the new Park Close to Home on Frith Street.

Following community engagement, Council endorsed a name for each of the sites in Brunswick.

Thank you to everyone who voted in 2023 and 2024 - your contributions helped name 2 significant projects that will become much-loved spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Council must now formalise the names with Geographic Names Victoria before we can announce them.

The site at 33 Saxon Street, Brunswick is currently undergoing a $29 million redevelopment to transform it into a state-of-the-art creative and accessible community hub that is expected to open by the end of 2024.

The hub will be a creative and inspiring community space in the heart of Brunswick, featuring affordable and accessible creative and community spaces, and quality outdoor public space.

Council purchased land at 14 Frith Street, Brunswick in 2019 to create a new park as part of the Park Close to Home program. The program aims to create more open space in Merri-bek near high-density housing, to ensure that people are within walking distance of well-designed and accessible parks. The new park is expected to open in September.

We eagerly await the formal approval of the names and cannot wait to share them with the community very soon!
