Council wants diverse applicants for school-crossing supervisors

20 Jan 2025

“Lollipop” men and ladies—the old-school term for school-crossing supervisors—occupy a special place as providers of community safety. They protect both children and adults, keeping a close eye on the dangers of street traffic during school-commuting hours, and in all kinds of weather.

Council needs more school-crossing supervisors, but myths and misunderstandings about the role—such as being suited only to retirees—may prevent great candidates from applying.

The role is paid, not voluntary, and offers an excellent opportunity for university students to earn an income without interfering with coursework and lectures. Likewise, we welcome applicants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and all-abilities communities.

A school-crossing supervisor role is a great way to become involved in the community, work for your local council, and even enjoy opportunities for professional growth.

Council will run an awareness campaign on social media in January and February designed to reach to these audiences specifically. Watch for them and share the messages with people you may know who would be interested.
