Ongoing industrial action by the ASU affecting some bin collections

Industrial action by the Australian Services Union (ASU) may affect bin collections this week, as well as a small number of other Council services.
The ASU’s ongoing work bans continue to affect some kerbside bin collections to the north of Bell Street. The ASU has also notified Council of two 24-hour strikes this week, on Wednesday 14 October (affecting bin collections only) and Thursday 15 October. Both of these strikes will last from 12am early on each day until midnight late on each night and will affect kerbside bin collection each day.
It’s regrettable that the ASU’s industrial action has affected our communities and customers, and we apologise for any disruption.
We will continue to negotiate in good faith with all unions representing our staff.
Please read on for details of which services are expected to be affected this week.
All week (12 to 17 October)
Bin collections (kerbside and public litter bins)
The ASU’s ongoing work bans on collecting every 5th kerbside waste bin continue to affect households to the north of Bell Street – where waste services are managed in-house. Kerbside bin collections south of Bell Street will not be affected as these are managed by a contractor.
The ASU’s planned strikes will also affect kerbside bin collections on both Wednesday and Thursday this week, with more than every 5th bin expected to be affected in some areas.
If you are north of Bell Street and your bins are not collected on any day this week, please leave them out and we will collect them as soon as we can. We are also doing extra bin collections on Saturday 17 October and working to minimise service disruptions where possible.
Some public litter bins may also not be emptied. We apologise for this inconvenience, please don’t overfill bins, instead take your litter home with you and the bins will be emptied on Thursday.
Thursday 15 October
Libraries
At this stage all of our libraries will be closed on Thursday 15 October. This also means that no library programs will run on Thursday.
If we are able to open any of our libraries on the day, for any period of time, we will update our website.
Returns chutes will be open at all libraries, and online library services will be available.
Glenroy Community Hub
The Glenroy library at the Glenroy Hub will be closed, as well as the customer service desk.
All other services in this building will operate as usual, including the maternal and child health service, the Glenroy Hub Children’s Centre, Glenroy Memorial Kindergarten, Glenroy Neighbourhood House. Booked functions continue as normal.
Customer Service Centres
The Coburg and Brunswick customer service centres will be open.
The customer service desk at the Glenroy Community Hub will be closed.

Home support
Essential services will be operating as normal, with some services such as cleaning rescheduled. All clients have been directly notified of any changes affecting them.
