Merri-bek City Council will reopen a transformed Fawkner Leisure Centre to the public on Sunday 8 December 2024.
The aquatic and leisure facility has undergone a significant $36.8 million redevelopment and opening just in time for summer.
Built with accessibility and sustainability in mind, the centre will provide more options for people of all ages and abilities to participate in a healthy and active lifestyle.
The centre features an 8-lane 50m outdoor heated pool, family water play pool, 6-lane 25m indoor heated pool and a learn-to-swim area; complemented with a highly anticipated new sauna, steam room and spa to de-stress or to relax after a great workout.
Fitness and wellness facilities include new multi-purpose spaces for group fitness and program rooms, an expanded gym with premium new equipment and an all-important stretch area.
The centre has a range of environmentally sustainable design elements and is now all-electric, aligning with Council’s zero carbon objectives. The original pools were built in the 1960s and were at the end of their serviceable life. Ageing facilities become more difficult and expensive to maintain over time.
Merri-bek City Council Mayor Helen Davidson said the new Fawkner Leisure Centre will be a wonderful facility for the Fawkner community and beyond.
“This major investment has seen Fawkner Leisure Centre transformed into a modern fitness and health hub, perfect for people of all ages and abilities,” Cr Davidson said.
“We know that participating in sport and recreation contributes to community health and wellbeing and we are delighted to re-open this transformed facility.
“With sustainability at its core, this new facility is more accessible to people with all abilities so everyone can feel welcome and included.
The community can come and see the centre before it opens by registering for the community celebration event on Saturday 7 December 2024.
