Celebrating 6 Wurundjeri Seasons
The Wurundjeri Seasons is a year-round projection art program that celebrates the ecological rhythms of the 6 distinct Wurundjeri seasons in the Merri-bek area and the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung language names for the seasons.
Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in a vibrant tapestry of changing colours, intricate textures, and dynamic ecological patterns that characterise each season. The artwork plays at Michelle Guglielmo Park every night from from dusk.
Wurundjeri people recognise 6 seasons in the Merri-bek area: high summer, late summer, early winter, deep winter, pre-spring, and true spring. Each season is identified by environmental signals observed in insects, animals, and plants.
Today, this seasonal framework—rooted in Wurundjeri cultural knowledge and the Woiwurrung language—is considered more accurate and relevant than the four seasons defined by European culture, because it offers a deeper and more relational understanding of our environment and its ecological flows.
The Wurundjeri Seasons - by Wurundjeri woman Jacqui Wandin
“The seasons signify change. During Biderap (high summer), the sun is much hotter so be careful where you step! Luk (late summer) provides an opportunity to rejuvenate, reflect, and learn. My favourite time of year is Guling (early spring), when the Silver Wattles are in full bloom, reminding us of Uncle Barak, our most courageous civil rights hero.”
