More investment in sport in Coburg North

Merri-bek City Councillors have supported a plan to upgrade Richards Reserve in Coburg North, which will deliver appropriate facilities for junior soccer players while increasing access to Hosken Reserve for informal use. 

Councillors supported a motion at the 13 April Council Meeting to determine the cost of upgrading a natural grass sports field at Richards Reserve. Councillors also supported the reallocation of $340,000 intended for Hosken Reserve’s East Field towards these upgrades. 

Mayor Councillor Mark Riley said the decision will give residents more access to Hosken Reserve for passive recreation, while recognising the importance of community sport. 

“Council is committed to community sport as an excellent way to stay active and form social connections,” Cr Riley said. 

 “We also recognise that all residents have a right to enjoy the wonderful parks, gardens and reserves in the City of Merri-bek, which are excellent for physical and mental wellbeing.” 

“This decision strikes the right balance to ensure local kids can play soccer close to home at a purpose-built facility, while all residents can enjoy the East Field at Hosken Reserve for walking their dog or kicking a ball around with their family. 

“I want to assure the Pascoe Vale Football Club and their members that they will still have access to the East Field until the North and South Field upgrades are complete. 

“I thank all members of the community who have shared their feedback with us. We believe this resolution fairly allocates open space in Coburg North to meet the needs of the entire community. 

Council is investing more than $7 million into the Hosken Reserve Masterplan, which includes significant upgrades to sports fields, lighting and pavilions in the reserve. The Masterplan will also deliver improvements for informal recreation use, such as tree planting, new pathways and picnic areas.
