Federal Election 2025 Funding Announcements on the Upfield Train Line
On this page:
In the lead-up to the 2025 Federal Elections, to be held this Saturday 3 May 2025, the major political parties and candidates have made commitments to fund important and necessary initiatives in Merri-bek if they are successful.
One of Council’s highest priority advocacy issues is about improving the Upfield rail line. Council is asking for federal funding for a feasibility study to upgrade and duplicate the Upfield Rail Corridor; and the extension and electrification of the Upfield Rail Line to Wallan. To learn more about these critical rail projects visit Northern Councils webpage.
We are delighted that the ALP, Greens and Coalition have all supported investment towards improving the Upfield rail line.
Announcement from the ALP
In February 2025, the ALP Federal Government announced $7.05 million towards delivery of a business case to develop and prioritise options for upgrades to Melbourne’s northern metropolitan railway lines, including the Upfield and Craigieburn train lines. It is understood this commitment may also be matched by a commitment from the Victorian State Government.
Announcement from the Australia Greens
In April 2025, the Greens committed to push for $600 million in federal funding to duplicate the Upfield train line so services can run more frequently.
Announcement from the Coalition
In March 2025, the Coalition announced a promise of $2 million towards a scoping report to outline the plan and cost estimates of duplicating and extending the Upfield Rail Line.
