Proposed realignment – Brunswick/Brunswick East suburb boundary

18 Dec 2025

Merri-bek City Council have identified a mixed-use development set to be impacted by a bisecting locality boundary between Brunswick and Brunswick East.

According to The Official Naming Rules for Places in Victoria, Section 5.7 ’locality boundaries must not bisect properties or land’ and the Australian New Zealand Standards for Rural and Urban Addressing outline ‘Boundaries of localities in areas that are subject to development should be reviewed and amended where appropriate.

The property lies within the Brunswick Activity Centre - Lygon Street Local Area Corridor and is identified in the metropolitan planning strategy, Plan Melbourne, as an urban renewal area for investment, employment and residential opportunities.

A small realignment is proposed to bring the entirety of the site within Brunswick East. This change is required to comply with state naming rules, meet addressing standards, better align with strategic planning, and to prevent mapping anomalies

This proposed suburb boundary realignment, if approved by Council, would not alter any existing dwelling addresses. It would allow for future address allocations to the consolidated site, and forthcoming mixed-use development to meet regulations. No other addresses will change. The boundary realignment would simply move the boundary to incorporate the whole development into Brunswick East.
