Keeping our roads in good repair

26 Jun 2025

Fixing potholes is like conducting surgery on our roads, and our road crews are experts.

Recently, our after-hours on-call officer responded immediately after being notified of a pothole on Mathieson Street in Coburg North. His role is to assess the risk and take immediate action to make conditions safe.  In this case, that meant filling the hole with cold-mix asphalt—a temporary measure to eliminate the danger.

Our road crew was able to repair the hole completely by 11.30 the next morning.

To fix this pothole, a powered saw cut out the damaged section down to the road bed, leaving strong, clean edges.  A 2 to 3-stage process of filling and power-tamping hot asphalt mixture into place completed the procedure, leaving a repair that will last 50 years.

Council learns of potholes in two ways. Our staff regularly inspect our roads to look for any issues, but we also receive notice from residents who contact Council through customer service or use our website to report them. In either scenario, we respond quickly because some problems can present a genuine road hazard.
