Council’s 2023–24 annual report highlights the benefits of investment in major new community facilities, with the $36.9 million Fawkner Leisure Centre redevelopment, and a new cultural and community centre, Balam Balam Place, in Brunswick. Two new parks were also created in Brunswick as part of the ‘A Park Close to Home’ program to increase the number of communal green spaces within walking distance of homes.
To prepare for Merri-bek’s future generations, Council made significant upgrades to kindergartens and dedicated more than $27 million to upgrade several early-years facilities over the next 5 years, including Oak Park Kindergarten and Derby Street Children’s Centre.
Here is a snapshot of some of the 150 services Council provided in 2023–24:
- delivered 59,928 meals to Merri-bek residents
- planted 2,718 trees
- loaned 1,226,831 books and electronic resources through libraries
- swept 33,369 kilometres of roads
- collected 26,431 tonnes of garbage
- collected 2,462 tonnes of glass and 10,530 tonnes of co-mingled recycling
- collected 2,247 tonnes of booked hard waste
- diverted 17,322 tonnes of food and garden waste from landfill
- vaccinated 4,007 children aged under 5 years, 1,329 high school students and 797 adults.
The annual report details all Council’s activities and spending from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 as required by the Local Government Act 2020.
