Ecologies of Attention

Ecologies of Attention by Nadège Philippe-Janon is an installation of oscillating, pendulum-like mechanisms powered by elemental forces such as wind, solar, and microbial life, as well as energy sources generated by fossil fuels. Built from everyday materials and activated by simple systems, the works respond to rhythmic cycles and shifting forces, exploring relationships to time, attention economies, and the ‘natural’ and ‘artificial’ systems that influence our environments.

Drawing on the cliched hypnotic legacy of the pendulum – and the idea that screen addiction is akin to a state of hypnosis – these gently moving objects attempt to recalibrate attention and presence. In an era of increasing climate anxiety and accelerating technological developments, Ecologies of Attention offers simple and playful prompts to slow down, tune into the body, and reconnect with the rhythms that shape everyday life.
