Sydney Road Brunswick History Tours

Our first series of History Tours for 2025, focusing on Iconic Shops, will take place on

This series of historical walking tours will focus on iconic shops within the Sydney Road Brunswick precinct, with stops at 10 iconic locations for a deep dive into their illustrious pasts, right up to their present day. Teaming up with the Brunswick Community History Group, and led by their local experts, attendees will take a leisurely and incredibly insightful walk within the Sydney Road Brunswick precinct, stepping back in time and into some well-known and much loved destinations throughout history.

Stops on the Iconic Shops tour include: *Hoopers Store (now the Hardwick Building) *Mediterranean Wholesalers *Maples Furniture Store (now Franco Cozzo) *McDougall’s Store (now Raffaele Ciuca Bridal) *Woolworths Variety Store (now La Manna Fresh) *Coles Variety Store (now Bunnings) *Davison’s Grocery Store (soon to be Azeemah) *Tough’s Ironmongers (now What the Putt) *Miss R. E. Yon (now Record Paradise) *McDougall’s Store (now Second Hand Phones) *Glew’s Claypit (now Barkly Square).

Along the way, attendees will enjoy a drink and a treat from 2 businesses within the precinct.

Ticket Price: Standard tickets cost $25 (plus 50c ticket fee) each. Purchasers have the option to upgrade, to include a limited-edition 175 Years of Sydney Road tote bag, for $39.50 (plus 50c ticket fee) each (see picture).

Duration & Inclusions: Tours run for approximately 1.5 hours, commencing at 11am and ending around 12.30pm.

Accessibility & Toilets: Please note that this series of historical walking tours are from the footpaths of the Sydney Road Brunswick precinct and inside some of the stops listed above. Some of these locations include stairs. The walk itself will be a slow stroll, for roughly 1km, with stops along the way, at the above locations.

Toilet locations on the tour include: Sparta Place (next to the car park accessed off Victoria Street) Brunswick Town Hall Barkly Square Shopping Centre.
