Contemporary Orientals— Latifa Elmrini

Contemporary Orientals presents a series of fragmented visions where the female body merges with a powerful yet subtle presence of rage.

Latifa Elmrini’s work interrogates how media consumption shapes the way we view the “Oriental” body—rendered as a site of ideological and psychological violence. Eyes trick the mind, narratives overlap, and bodies are distorted, creating images that are both bizarre and uncanny.

Based in Naarm, Elmrini is a multidisciplinary artist, producer and writer whose practice moves between oil painting and language. Her work subverts traditional Western notions of beauty and power by re-appropriating images of Islamic bodies, women and animals. Through visual storytelling, she challenges the persistence of the colonial gaze, reversing its terms by re-composing narratives of strangeness, loss and memory. In Contemporary Orientals, this fragmented style resists fixed perspective, opening space for both rupture and reclamation.
