This rare Classical-era instrument, resembling a viola da gamba but adorned with an extra course of 11 metal strings, produces mesmerising melodies enveloped in a lush, resonant ambience.
Cherished by Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, who inspired Haydn to compose over 130 works, the baryton takes centre stage in Haydn’s elegant and charming Divertimenti, often known as ‘Baryton Trios.’ Imbued with inventiveness and vibrant colours, these delightful pieces showcase the baryton’s pivotal role in creating beautiful sonorities when harmonising with lower instruments.
