Merri-bek City Council has invested in a trial of smart bins across different Parks. It installed 10 bins as a test to gather data and see if they would be a good fit for the council.
Smart bins are pretty smart!
The bins can hold more than five times the capacity of a standard 120-litre bin. This is thanks to its compaction capabilities. The bins have solar panels which generate energy to compress the waste. They also have sensors which notify the collection staff when it's time to be emptied.
What are the benefits of Smart Bins?
- A reduction in the number of waste collections needed by up to 80%. This results in less manpower, emissions, fuel use and traffic congestion.
- A reduction in the number of waste bins needed.
- We can analyse data to manage collection routes and the placement of bins more effectively.
- Improved environment (i.e. no overflowing bins and less unpleasant odours)
