Internet of things

The internet of things (IoT) is a set of technologies that use sensors and actuators to inform us about the status of everyday items. These items could be vehicles, bins, tools and even living beings.

It allows us to interact with them, enabling connectivity with platforms that receive and process information for analysis. This data is then used to make informed decisions.

Applications for Use

Air Quality Sensor

Air Quality Sensors are installed inside the council facilities to measure air quality. The readings use ISO16000-29 standard “Test methods for VOC detectors”. Sensors placed in the environment can track air pollution, humidity, light, temperature and noise.

Particulate Matter Sensor

Particulate Matter Sensors are installed inside the council facilities to measure air quality. The readings use EPA Air Watch categories for PM 2.5 and PM 10. For more information on how air quality is calculated, visit the EPA website. Readings are influenced and subject to the location of the sensor.

People Counter

People counters monitor foot traffic. This includes the direction of travel, frequency and peak usage times, and growth and changes in urban areas. Merri-bek City Council people counters are not bi-directional.
